When to see a doctor?

Diarrhea

Diarrhea is often caused by gut infection or contaminated food and usually improves within a few days to a week. The most critical step is preventing dehydration.

What to do at home?

  • Drink plenty of water and fluids, taking small sips frequently.
  • Oral rehydration salts (ORS) sold in pharmacies are very beneficial.
  • Eat light foods and wash your hands with soap.

See a doctor within 1 to 2 days if:

  • Lasts more than 2 days in adults, or more than 1 day in a child.
  • Accompanied by high fever or severe abdominal pain.
  • Started following recent travel.

Go to emergency immediately or call 122 if:

  • Blood in stool, or black stools.
  • Signs of dehydration: very little or no urination, dry mouth, dizziness upon standing.
  • Unable to keep any liquids down due to vomiting.
  • Confusion or extreme weakness.

Children & Pregnant Women

  • Infant: if their diaper has not been wet for more than 6 hours, their eyes appear sunken, or they cry without tears: take them to a doctor immediately.
  • Continue breastfeeding or formula feeding infants.
